Fresh out of university, Carla Birch is trying to make a name for herself in the cut- throat world journalism. Her old lecturer guides her to the idea of being an investigative journalist and suggests doing some research into a family legend to prove its accuracy. 

She sets out to find the truth from a family rumour that her own grandfather was a deserter during the 2nd world war and wanted for treason. Her journey takes her to Japan where she finds the memory of a man, who was not a traitor but an honoured and decorated hero, championing the cause of displaced people, specifically Korean women who were taken to Japan and forced into prostitution.   The story takes a surprising turn when she finds out why her grandfather was there in the first place. When a 75 year old state secret remains classified, Carla will stop at nothing to discover the truth and unlock the vaults of government departments.
